Super Rich Pensions Root of Political Change
There are few reporters I respect more than Lowell Reese of Kentucky Roll Call. He calls 'em as he sees 'em. His latest post on Kentucky Roll Call is an expose of the General Assembly's self enrichment by tinkering with their retirement system. Here's a tiny taste of what he's found:
               "
.... Former state Rep. Steve Nunn served about one year as deputy secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services before he resigned in March. Nunn had served 16 years in the House of Representatives before taking the cabinet job at $125,000 a year.
On top of Nunn's salary – just for serving that one year in the cabinet, and because it’s a job where he participated in a government-administered pension system (KERS) – $244,062 was added to his legislative pension. You could say his total compensation for being the deputy secretary for one year was $369,062...."
and there is so much more...

Biomass - the promise of jobs for farm communities
"The Future of the Green Economy in the Purchase Area, Kentucky and the Mid-South" was the subject of a dinner meeting at Murray State on Tuesday evening.  We were there taking frantic notes on a cautiously optimistic presentation.
... A joint effort of five states, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee, focusing on 98 counties along Old Man River, with corporate, nonprofit and educational sponsors, and coordinated by Memphis Bioworks Foundation, the project predicts that:
“…within two decades, it is reasonable to anticipate a total impact within the 98-county region approaching 50,000 total (direct plus indirect) jobs through a maturing industrial bioprocessing products economy.”

Question: Where is the stimulus money going? Answer: Bardwell, KY
Question: Where is the stimulus money going? Answer: Bardwell, KY
Editor's Note: Thanks to Michael Toon for sharing this story. WKJPI gets asked often where the stimulus money is going. Mike has the answer for one small West Kentucky town.
....the citizens of Bardwell, while enjoying the fresh coats of paint, new roofs and improved water system have expressed their concern about the costs to the city for these projects, fearing that these projects would spell out increased tax rates for the citizens of Bardwell.
Having heard those concerns, the Carlisle Weekly sat down with Bardwell Mayor Philip King to address those issues.
Mayor King told the Weekly that the projects that the city has undertaken, as of late have been all funded by grant money and money from the stimulus package.....

Update: Ghostbuster exorcises haunted commode
Update: Ghostbuster exorcises haunted commode
UPDATE: Mike Pickard, our local Water Services Inc. rep, read about our problem before coming to work this morning. Soon after I opened the door, he showed up with his magic potion to drive away the toilet ghost.  For the record, he wasn't sent by corporate.
It seems that the float was hanging up on the flapper. He said it's not unusual for a leaky commode to double or triple a water bill. Who knew?
I opened my water bill last week and freaked out. How could we have used 5100 gallons of water in 34 days in an office with two people, one sink and one commode??
....Peggy told me she did the math and to use 5100 gallons in 34 days, I would have to flush 30 times a day, 7 days a week...

The Clinton City Council hears crime concerns
The Clinton City Council hears crime concerns
When one  thinks of a crime wave, the small city of Clinton, Kentucky, is slow to come to mind.  Recently, the city has been experiencing a crime wave that has residents frightened and merchants angry.  Break ins and armed robberies brought some to the City Council on Monday, September 14th to share their concerns.
Local grocer Greg Godby told the Council that three armed robberies at Greg's Market, the only grocery store in town, moved him to come to the meeting and plead for increased police enforcement.

Attorney General Conway - cybercrime fighter
Attorney General Conway - cybercrime fighter
Attorney General Jack Conway's stump speech is evolving. His old material is still there. A goodly portion of his five minutes at St. Johns Picnic on Saturday was spent talking about his fight against cybercrime. The AG said that his office has trained 400 local officers in the fight against cybercrime and that he created a cybercrimes lab.
Conway continues to work to create links to his audience. He told the crowd he was the first to go to college on his mother's side of the family, that he learned responsibility and service from his family.
In some new material, Conway said that he sued the Beshear Administration to keep violent offenders in jail. He cited  KERA as a shining example of public education and deplored Kentucky's high drop out rates. Conway said that he supports health care reform and promised not to vote for a bill that harms Kentucky coal.

Gatewood Galbraith - the only Latin speakin' candidate
Gatewood Galbraith - the only Latin speakin' candidate
It only takes a very short conversation with Gatewood Galbraith to find out that in addition to being very, very funny, he is very, very smart. Saturday at St. John's Picnic, he showed off just a bit by reciting the old Catholic mass in Latin for the crowd.
Galbraith, running as an independent in the 2011 election for governor, then took on both political parties. He told an approving crowd that party politics is not the answer. Pointing to the crowd, he said that yellow dog Democrats and die hard GOP voters were equally at fault for the mess the state is in.
He promised to work with both parties if elected, not caring who got credit as long as the job got done.

Mongiardo at St. Johns - I'm the peoples' candidate
Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo has his stock speech down pat - a heaping helping of his rags to riches autobiography, a cup of health care reform, a tablespoon of qualifications - if elected, he'll   be the only Democratic doctor in the US Senate and a dash of Conway baiting, contrasting his grass roots support to Conway's assertion that he is the choice of Washington Democrats - all stirred up with a big wooden spoon of sincerity.
He stuck to his recipe on Saturday and while he didn't get the big applause, he lost no ground. When one is neck and neck at the front of the pack, that counts as a very good day, indeed.

Rand Paul - it's all the career pols fault

St. Johns Picnic - Civility Rules the Day
St. Johns Picnic - Civility Rules the Day
St. Johns Picnic this year was a very much quieter event than it's bigger, noisier cousin over in Fancy Farm. Candidates took a few shots at each other, but they were not particularly new and not particularly unexpected.
The crowd was sparse - possibly because advertising for the picnic and news reports universally omitted the time of the political speaking.
The emphasis this year was on dinner being served at the Knights of Columbus across the four lane highway from the church and the speaking pavilion.
With that being said, it was a beautiful day for a picnic and we took lots of pictures.

News round up
Rand Paul was in the hospital over the weekend with a stomach problem.  He should have been released from the hospital on Sunday.
Gatewood Galbraith, running mate Dea Riley and Denise Crawford Price, Democratic candidate for the US Senate, were in Paducah for the Labor Day parade.

Rep. Nesler has opposition in the 2010 general election from a Libertarian candidate. Tim Havrilek ofThe Underground Rooster interviewed Jeff King, Nesler’s opponent.  The Underground Rooster We have to wonder if this will start a trend of third party candidates filing against legislators.
Greg’s Market in Clinton was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday. The grainy photos show two black men in hoods. Luckily no one was hurt. The suspects are considered armed and dangerous.
Garden and Gun Magazine has an absolutely terrific account of a Kentucky man who set the croquet world on its ear. Also in this issue – Roy Blunt, Jr.’s very funny account of the plants as advertised and the ones that actually grow in his garden and a Manhattan landscape designer for the stars with a Kentucky connection. If there’s one magazine, we recommend, it’s this Charleston SC publication with its double take title.
Dan Brown of “The DaVinci Code” fame has a new book, “The Lost Symbol”, coming out on September 15th.  By all accounts, it’s going to be mega. Professor Robert Langdon (played twice by Tom Hanks) is back – this time there’s a Masonic mystery. The publisher is printing 15 million copies – that’s there million more than the J. K. Rowling’s finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. Get more details at USA Today
The Kentucky Office of Homeland Security just awarded some grants for weapons, tasers and body armor.
