St. Johns Picnic - Civility Rules the Day
St. Johns Picnic this year was a very much quieter event than its bigger, noisier cousin over in Fancy Farm. Candidates took a few shots at each other, but they were not new and not particularly unexpected. Candidates begin to fall into an insult rhythm that will continue throughout the campaigns. Trying different barbs and seeing which one will stick is a time honored tradition.
The crowd was smaller than in years past- possibly because advertising for the picnic and news reports universally omitted the time of the political speaking, possibly because the emphasis this year was on dinner being served at the Knights of Columbus across the four lane highway from the church and the speaking pavilion and most likely because this is not an election year and enthusiasm for candidates is far outweighed by a disdain for candidates.
With that being said, it was a beautiful day for a picnic and we took lots of pictures.
At left, Supreme Court Justice, historian Judge Bill Cunningham served as master of ceremonies.
Below, singing McCracken County politicians - Court of Appeals Judge Shay Nickles led the day.

Signs turned out for Rand Paul.
