MSU’s TSM program wins third straight national student case study

Murray State University Telecommunications Systems Management (TSM) faculty, staff and students attended the ITERA Educational Conference April 17-20in Atlanta, Ga., where a team of graduate students won first place with their proposal for a hypothetical cutting-edge hospital named HealthNet, the ITERA National Student Case Study. TSM also received the award for the Best Graduate Program in the Nation by ITERA.

MURRAY, Ky. — The International Telecommunications Education and Research Association (ITERA) awarded Murray State University’s Telecommunications Systems Management (TSM) students first place at the ITERA National Student Case Study Competition in Atlanta, Ga., this April. Two TSM graduates, John Knight and Jesse Calhoun, attended the conference to present their team’s solution for Healing Net, a cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure for a fictional hospital. The team that created the case study project last fall won $1,500 to split among the team and a trophy for the university. Team members in addition to Knight and Calhoun were Jimmy St. Louis and Lisbeth Boyd, who are also TSM graduates.

Other teams in the final competition included Ball State University and Texas A&M. The student team created its proposal during the capstone TSM graduate class and worked from different locations all over the region through online communication tools. They then presented their case study to TSM faculty and staff to compete against other MSU teams for presentation at the final competition in Atlanta.  The panel of judges in Atlanta ranged from ITERA board members to industry representatives.

Several other MSU students and faculty members were in Atlanta presenting their own accepted research papers at the ITERA conference. This is the third year in a row that a TSM grad student team, under the direction of George Rice, graduate advisor, has won the ITERA National Student Case Study Competition.

Started in 2004, ITERA is focused on the development and the advancement of telecommunications as an academic discipline by creating a forum for academics and industries to collaborate. Murray State was a key player in founding the ITERA organization — it was formed from the original MSU TSM Annual Conference in Louisville, Ky., when many academic attendees recognized the need for a working association between universities with telecom programs. Murray State TSM staff continue to lead ITERA, holding positions on the board of directors and conference committees.

More information on ITERA and its academic members can be found online at www.itera.org.
