September 18th Constitution Day
September 18th Constitution Day
....A reconsideration of the Constitution is particularly pressing at this moment in our history.

We are facing a balance of powers issue, one created by an executive branch that believes itself to be more co-equal than the other two branches. Mrs. Cheney’s husband is a strong proponent of “Executive First”. Vice President Cheney is a strong advocate of the concept that the executive is far and away the senior partner with the judicial and legislative branches.

Ballard County Hit by Ike
Residents across the region were surprised Sunday morning when strong winds struck the area.  The surprise wasn’t from the winds but from their source.  What was once a category 3 hurricane, roared into our region early Sunday morning bringing 50-MPH winds and wind gusts.

Gas Gouging Before and After Ike

As commuters learned of the anticipated price increases, an ensuing frenzy began at local stations. Many drivers found they were too late when it was reported that some stations in Paducah had already raised their prices to $4.59 per gallon. Ballard Countians arrived home on Thursday evening only to awaken on Friday to find the prices had increased from $3.69/gal to $4.59 in LaCenter.

Prices in Wickliffe didn’t go up until after noon on Friday but as I pumped $40 in gasoline at $3.79 gallon, the price was being changed to $4.29 a gallon.

We Don't Like Ike!
We Don't Like Ike!
Well, we’re back. The power's back on and we have internet access again.

It has been an interesting few days. “Interesting” in the Chinese curse way. As everyone from the Gulf to the Great Lakes knows by now, Hurricane Ike was a big mean storm that made a pretty good run for Canada.

Lunsford Responsible for High Gas - Big Exaggeration
Dear Editor:
Whoever said truth is often the first casualty in political warfare must have had Sen. Mitch McConnell in mind.
His ad blaming Bruce Lunsford for contributing to high gasoline prices in Kentucky is “a big exaggeration.” Those aren’t my words. “Big exaggeration” is how the nonpartisan FactCheck.org Internet website characterizes the ad.

Hog Farm Neighbor Wants Peaceful Enjoyment
Editor's Note - We got an email from Sam Hancock, Curtis Hancock's son,  responding to this story. His response is posted below the story.
We also received the photo at left taken in late July. We can't tell what sort of manure it is from the photo. Jackson and his supporters say hog manure. Mr. Hancock says chicken waste
.

Ed Jackson, Water Valley resident, once enjoyed sitting out on the deck of his house to relax. Not anymore. More often than not, he says, he can’t sit out on the deck. The smell is more than he can stand. Ed has the bad fortune of living within a half mile of Curtis Hancock’s farm

Coal - 250 Years Left. Maybe. Maybe Not.
Editor's Note: We posted this article on July 1st. We thought it worth a second look in light of Rep. Whitfield's comments at St. Johns Picnic.

Everybody knows that the US has 250 years left in its coal supply. Everybody, it seems, but the National Academy of Sciences.

“There is probably sufficient coal to meet the nation’s energy needs for more than 100 years at current rates of consumption.” The study said. “However, it is not possible to confirm the often-quoted assertion that there is a sufficient supply of coal for the next 250 years.”
