The Declaration of Independence

The 4th of July is a day for picnics, fireworks and barbecues. Sometimes, we Americans need to remind ourselves of what we celebrate. We publish here the full text of the Declaration.  The very name of the document "Declaration" means it was meant to be read aloud to the people (most of whom were illiterate at the time).  To honor the day, take a few minutes to read it aloud.

Utah Four Day Work Week: Is This a Model for Kentucky State Government?
In the face of $4-a-gallon gasoline, a growing number of states are offering their employees four-day workweeks to help relieve commuting costs and save on state energy bills.

In the boldest step so far, Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. (R) announced June 26 that he is imposing a four-day workweek on about 17,000 state employees starting the first week of August and continuing for at least a year. Employees will work 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and about 1,000 of the 3,000 state buildings will be closed on Fridays. Essential services, such as highway patrols, courts, public schools and colleges, will not be affected by the changes, which are expected to save the state $3 million, said Lisa Roskelley, the governor’s spokeswoman.

House Bill 1- the Special Session's Only Legislation
House Bill 1- the Special Session's Only Legislation
UPDATE: Senate votes 35-1 for passage of House Bill 1 on Friday morning. As expected, a few minutes after the Senate adjourned, the House also passed the bill in record time.

We take a brief, confused look at HB 1 by comparing it to HB 600, a similar bill from the 2008 Regular Session.
