Sen. Ken Winters chairs the Senate Education Committee.

(Frankfort, KY - Jan. 30, 2012) Senator Ken Winters will announce today that he won’t run for another term in the Kentucky Senate.  First elected in 2004, he’s served two terms in the General Assembly, Winters currently chairs the Senate Education Committee.

Senator Winters is a retired educator, having served as a professor at Murray State University and as president of Campbellsville University. He holds a doctorate from University of Northern Colorado. Winters and his wife, Shirley, live in Murray.

In a statement released this afternoon, Winters said, “Nearly eight years ago, after serving a 37-year career in education, I was asked to run for the District 1 State Senate seat.  My wife and I decided, after much thought, discussion, and prayer, to make this move.  Our decision was based on the fact that we were in relatively good health, and we had great concern about the educational future of the young people of Kentucky.

We now find that health issues have become a major obstacle to continuing our work in the Kentucky State Senate.  Therefore, I am announcing that I will not be a candidate for re-election for a third term for the 1st District Senate seat in Western Kentucky.”

One candidate, Democrat Carroll Hubbard, has filed to run for the seat. Speculation is that Trigg County Judge Stanley Humphries will file to run on the GOP ticket.

The deadline to file is Tuesday, January 31st.
